First Aid

The ACT Education First Aid Policy relates to the management of first aid in the Directorate including in our school, training, facilities, records management and provision of first aid to students, staff and visitors to our school. All staff have a duty of care to students to provide assistance to manage accidents, illnesses or injuries that may occur during the school day.

Our school has designated First Aid Officers who have been appointed on the basis of their qualifications and availability to perform the duties of a first aid officer as required. The designation of first aid officers ensures that, should an accident, illness or injury occur at school or at an excursion venue, students have access to first aid assistance to the level of staff competence and training, including calling on professional medical assistance such as ACT Ambulance Services if necessary.

Our schools first aid facilities meet Directorate Policy requirements and are equipped to manage most accidents, injuries or illnesses that may occur while your child is at school. Children are most usually treated and are able to return to class. In some instances, children will present with injuries which are above the training or capabilities of our first aid officers. In these instances, parents or carers will be called to make arrangement for their child to be collected from school as soon as possible. Children will be monitored and cared for until you arrive. Please note that our facilities are not suitable for long-term or ongoing care of children who are unwell or require further medical attention above the training and capabilities of our first aid officers.

The ACT Education First Aid Policy includes the provision for the management of students with known medical conditions, including but not limited to Anaphylaxis, Asthma, Diabetes or Epilepsy and / or the administration of medication requirements while at school. Please see Medical Conditions for information and forms to be completed for this.
