Volunteers and Visitors

Volunteers and visitors bring benefits and enrichment to educational programs and other supporting activities directed to and in support of students and our school. The contribution you make to our leaning programs and our school by sharing your time, knowledge and expertise are greatly valued and welcomed.

ACT Education Volunteers and Visitors in Schools – Policy provides a framework for the involvement of volunteers and visitors in schools to support the delivery of educational programs and other activities for students and schools, whilst protecting the rights of students to learn in a safe and positive educational environment and ensuring compliance with Working with Vulnerable People (Background Checking) Act 2011 (WWVP Act) legislation obligations.

All Volunteers and Visitors in Schools must complete a Nomination Form, Code of Conduct Agreement and induction process annually, prior to your first volunteer activity. If you wish to volunteer regularly throughout the year, you will also be required to register for a WWVP card.

Chapman Primary School has an updated Volunteers and Visitors in Schools Information Pack to support this framework and provide information and provide our volunteers and visitors with all the information you need to support you. This pack includes:

Please always enter and exit the school via the front office to sign in and out at each visit and let our front office staff know when you arrive and are leaving. This is important so we can maintain the safety of everyone on our school site if an emergency situation should arise.

Working with Vulnerable People

The Working with Vulnerable People (Background Checking) Act 2011 (the Act) commenced on 7 November 2012. The Act aims to reduce the risk of harm or neglect to vulnerable people in the ACT. Changes to the ACT on 12 April 2023 further strengthen the protections available to vulnerable people in our community. The Act requires people working or volunteering in a regulated activity or service on a regular basis to register with the Office of Regulatory Services.

We encourage anyone over the age of 16 who is interested in becoming a regular volunteer to apply for a Working with Vulnerable People Registration card. There is no cost to volunteers for WWVP registration card which are issued for a period of 5 years. Your WWVP registration will allow you to volunteer at the school in a number of roles as well as other regulated activities or services (including your child’s weekend sporting activities).
